About Selena

I am a wife, mother, closet passionate writer, and a joyfully redeemed child of God. The primary joys in my life are namely Christ, my husband Ukali, and my four children, Kayla Breanne (16), Isaiah Charles (15), Jordan Christopher (13) and Leah Renee (11).

The Lord rescued me at the age of 16 and although the past 22 years have been, at times, a difficult and painful process, I would not look back.  Gods grace towards me is nothing short of miraculous – amazing – captivating, and I truly owe Him my life.

My husband Ukali was born in South Beach, California while I was born in Akron, Ohio, and we thank the Lord for bringing us together.  As much as I thought I wanted to live all over the world and experience so many different things, I now realize that had I followed my own plan for my life I would have missed the best parts of it; my joys. Ukali and I had a lot in common when we got married, but we also had a lot of differences. And there were definitely times when the differences looked as if they would overwhelm us and leave us for dead. Over the last 17 years our commonalities have grown and our differences have minimized as we find joy in Christ and each other, and as we commit everyday to becoming one.

I have homeschooled our four children for the past eight years, with our current year being our ninth. This is something I am very committed to and in 2011 God did so many wonderful things in my heart and in my relationship with Him that caused my passion for homeschooling to grow exponentially! 😀 I know that this passion is not shared by all, but it is shared by some, and I desire to connect with some and be a voice of Wisdom to others.

I have been writing since I was nine years old and hope to use this gift to aid in the discipleship of women everywhere.  In the beginning it was primarily poetry and short stories, but as I grew in Christ and the direction of the use of my gifts and talents were impacted by His grace, I began to develop study guides for women and girls of all ages.

My husband was a senior pastor for several years, and during that time I directed Women’s ministries as well as children’s ministries. I have facilitated ladies teas, workshops, and been the keynote speaker at an event or two, and while I greatly enjoy the opportunity to disciple women through teaching, my heart continues to long for the paper and the pen.

I have four great passions in my life, with my love for Christ being the greatest.  My husband and my children are in a solid second place, with my love for writing and teaching women claiming the third and fourth place spots.  This blog will hopefully accomplish a few things; (1)share a plethora of information and perspectives that will wrap up me, my passions, my inadequacies, successes, failures, perspectives, as well as (2) my reactions/responses to this sin-sick culture that surrounds us, so greatly impacts us, and works overtime to distort our view of God, His Word, and His love for us…and filter all of these things through the immeasurable, invaluable, perfect lens of God’s Word, bringing us out on the other side with a much-needed, greatly longed for, Biblical Worldview. I want to tell you in advance that I enjoy talking to you, and sharing with you, and hearing from you, and look forward to doing it daily. Just between you and me…I love words and use a lot of them :D. So pace yourselves…

Here’s to a beautiful friendship!

Joyfully Submitted,

Selena

Hi Selena – I found your blog as I was googling about Vemma and iron deficiency. A friend of mine sent me Vemma to try and I just started it, but I was struck by a couple of things in this blog post. I have the same type of anemia that your mother had, specifically very very low red blood cell count making me another of the ‘walking dead’. It’s not clear why my hemoglobin is so low and it has me worried, may I ask what the situation with your mother was – was it determined why she was so low, and how is she doing now?

Also I was shocked to see that eating ice cubes could be a sign of anemia – I’ve been doing that for months now and attributed it to the fact that we got a new refrigerator with ice on the door, but now I’m wondering whether it’s not that simple!

      Hi Jennifer,

Let me start by saying how happy I am that someone shared Vemma with you!!! It has been a life saver for me and my family. Where my mother’s health is concerned, I do not believe they ever conclusively found the cause. After 2 blood transfusions and an IV bag full of iron, she felt like a new woman. I am a researcher by nature, and have researched tons of natural remedies for low iron other than the ferrous sulfate tablets that make me sick and cause constipation. I’ve looked at tinctures and teas and adding beets, liver, and green leafy vegetables to my diet in extremely large quantities. What I landed on was increasing the dosage of Vemma from 2oz. a day to 6oz. a day. I find that any less than 6oz and I still get run down before the end of the day. Iron is a mineral so iron deficiency is a mineral deficiency. It made sense to me that increasing the Vemma would help. I also began to add liver (just twice a month, usually following my cycle), and green leafy vegetables…but NEVER beets! My Mom was told that the ‘temporary fix’ would last 3-6 months before they would have to address it again. The doctors hoped that during that time they would be able to find the cause. She takes Vemma (2oz daily) and has lasted almost 8 months but is now beginning to feel run down and to crave cornstarch again. I have talked to her about increasing her dosage of Vemma but she is content with her 2oz. daily dose. I truly believe that your health will improve with continued use of Vemma. After a year of using it I stopped because I felt so much better. Six months later I thought I felt worse than I ever had in my life. It turns out that I didn’t feel worse, I had simply returned to my ‘normal’ pre-Vemma state. I will never be off of this product again. I understand why it’s called Nutrition for a lifetime. I hope this helps. Please keep me posted on how you’re doing!

    Hi Selena,
I have a question about all the African American history that you’ve pinned on pinterest? I would like to know if you have come across any southern African American counted cross stitch patterns.

Juanita, I have not that I recall. The pins are for a project that my kids ad I are doing. We are compiling as much as we can for the purpose of teaching young people I in our community. I will look into the cross stitch and see what I can find!
